Romanian Modern Art Gallery
The Modern Romanian Art Gallery comprises 120 works representing a selection from the heritage of the Mures Art Museum and proposes an unprecedented approach to a century of Romanian painting and sculpture (1850-1955). These works – some of them extraordinary – allow us to review the development of modern Romanian painting, to match them with the aspirations and trends of European art and their attachment to the great Western culture. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery has set itself the goal of presenting a century of Romanian painting and sculpture in its own diversity and completeness. Portraits, landscapes, interiors, still lifes, avant-garde compositions by artists like: Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Ion Andreescu, Stefan Luchian, Gheorge Petraşcu, Theodor Pallady, Nicolae Tonitza, Dimitrie Paciurea, Nicolae Dărăscu, Ion Ţuculescu, Corneliu Baba, Ziffer Sándor, Eugen Gâscă, Ion Vlasiu and many others.
A very useful tool for the exhibition is the catalog “Tradition, avant-garde and Modernism”, edited in three languages: Romanian, Hungarian and English, which opts for the chronological presentation of artistic trends too, thus providing a very succinct history of the modern Romanian painting. In addition to information about the proposed theme and selected works, the catalog also includes the artists’ biographical references.
